← β†’ ← Historic Lent Where these come from β†’

In the historic Western rite, Lent alone has proper readings appointed for every weekday, not just Sundays. As a rule each day has two lessons β€” an Epistle (in Lent almost always from the Old Testament) and a Gospel; the Ember Days and the Wednesday and Saturday of Laetare carry extra lessons. Sunday rows are shaded, for context. Tap any reference to open it at BibleGateway. Each weekday's day card (tap the day's name) also gives the Mass's historic introit and collect β€” public-domain texts of the old Western rite, labelled as such since Lutheran service books never carried weekday propers (details).

pre-LSB Historic Western β€” dropped by LSB β€” the older usage The Lutheran Missal preserves.
LSB add. Modern (LSB) β€” not part of the historic set β€” mostly the modern third (Old-Testament) reading on Sundays.
(unmarked) Historic Western β€” retained in LSB.

On the Holy Week Gospels. For Monday and Tuesday of Holy Week, The Lutheran Missal follows the order used by every catalogued Lutheran source and by the older northeast-German missals β€” Mark on Monday, John on Tuesday β€” even though the wider manuscript record favors the reverse (the order LSB uses) roughly two to one. The Lutheran usage is taken to preserve an older tradition 'as yet unaltered by Rome.'
